Personal care and hygiene is important for a healthy life. From childhood, we started learning importance of personal hygiene from our parents and at school. Some of good hygiene habits learned in the childhood are remembered and followed throughout lifetime. In fact, even adults learn new personal care and hygiene through several awareness programs, floated by government and private institutions. Discover below some important hygiene and personal care tips or kids as well as elders.

Personal Hygiene Tips  

There is no doubt that the most important personal hygiene is having a shower or a bath every day. This helps you prevent bad body odor, and feel fresh and clean throughout the day. In addition to shower, keeping the hair clean is also necessary to maintain them healthy and shiny. Visiting the cutting salon and getting your haircut from a god barber is a good practice. Regular face washing is also a good habit that makes you look beautiful and prevent facial problems. Washing the face before going to bed should not be neglected; it helps remove dirt particles which get accumulated on face during the day.

Wearing clean clothes also contribute in keeping you healthy. It is essential that you wash your dirty clothes before wearing them. Wear clothes that fit you well that are not too tight which can impair your blood circulation, leading to cardiovascular disease. It is not recommended to wear very strong-smelling perfumes on your clothes which can irritate you as well as the people around you.  

Having clean nails is more than cosmetic; it is healthy. Keeping the nails of the hands and the feet in good clean and dry is necessary to prevent fungal infection and other nail disease. But having long nails – either natural or artificial – increase the chance of carriage of bacteria and pathogenic germs. Therefore, use a nail cutter to cut your nails to the proper length to prevent the germs and bacteria entering your mouth, or pass them to other people around. If you have the habit of biting your nails while having long nails, you should give it up immediately. 

Do not neglect oral hygiene which can cause serious oral problems and cardiovascular disease (see Dental Cavities and Heart Disease ). Brushing the teeth after each meal is the most important dental care. It has been observed that many people lack the knowledge of brushing the teeth properly. You can visit your dentist and learn the proper techniques for your own benefit. You should also ensure that your gums are in good health.

Washing your hands clean using an antiseptic soap or hand wash should be one of the most important personal hygiene tips for kids and adults. Do not neglect to wash your hands before and after meal, after coming home from outside, after having done work. This helps the hands stay free from disease-causing germs. Failure to do so can lead to serious infections and diseases. 

Common Hygiene Mistakes to Avoid 

Here's a list of many common hygiene mistakes people tend to make: 

  • Neglecting teeth brushing after meal or before going to bed - Cleaning your teeth after lunch and dinner is a crucial hygiene habit that will keep you away from dental cavities and other dental problems. 
  • Having habit of sharing combs, brushes, clips, napkins, towels, clothes and even water bottles -  It is not recommended to share these items as they carry germs and dead cells 
  • Neglecting of washing hands before and after meal - You can use anti-bacterial soap to get rid of germs or kill bacteria on our hands. But when used excessively, anti-bacterial soaps can kill normal skin cells and cause skin dryness and irritation. 
  • Using perfumes, deodorants and scents often which can cause skin allergies.  
  • Having or wearing long nails – cosmetically they look attractive, but this is bad hygiene habit. Whenever you eat, some food particles get stuck up under the nails thus causing infections. In fact, even feces can be carried under the nails.  
  • Neglecting to take a bath every day even when feel clean - Normally, as you evacuate in your daily activities, you sweat which may go unnoticed. In addition, you tend to visit places which put you in contact with various bacteria and dust particles. Only a good shower can help you get rid of those pathogens. 
  • Neglecting to wash face every day - Even if your facial skin seems to be clean it is important to wash it with clean water before going to bed. If you have an oily skin, do not use soap every time you wash your face. Instead use a moisturizer and keep your skin smooth. 
  • Neglecting to take care of the hair - wash your hair after every three days so that they stay away from dandruff and scalp infections.  
  • Drinking little water - you must drink at least 8 glasses of water every day to help your digestive system function properly. It makes the toxins in your body drain away on a regular basis. 
  • Using socks for two or three consecutive days - It is not clean to wear socks for many times without cleaning them. It’s bad. Firstly, because it stinks and secondly, because it can cause infection between the fingers. 
  • Wearing dirty clothes – it is a good habit to wash clothes at regular intervals. It is even more important when it comes to underwear. 
  • Neglecting to clean ears regularly - Use ear swabs to clean the outer and inner parts of the ears. Do not use water.  
  • Coughing with mouth uncovered - Cover your mouth and go away from people while sneezing or coughing. Use a handkerchief for the purpose. Also, after sneezing, use a handkerchief r paper tissue to clean your nose.  
  • Neglecting the steering wheel - Clean the steering wheel when you are going for a drive. That is one of the most forgotten places. Also, clean the mats inside your car on a regular basis. If the dirt inside the car is not cleaned frequently, it may cause nasal allergies or nasal irritation.
